When managing incontinence, comfort and cleanliness go hand in hand. Whether you're caring for yourself or supporting a loved one, keeping the skin healthy is just as important as using the right adult diaper.
At TrueHugz, we understand how sensitive the skin can become, especially in Singapore’s hot and humid weather. That's why we're not only committed to creating breathable, ultra-soft diapers but also to educating our community on proper skincare and hygiene practices.
In this post, we share essential tips to help prevent rashes, irritation, and infections caused by prolonged moisture and friction. These tips are especially useful for those who use adult diapers regularly, day or night.
The skin around the genital and buttock area is delicate. When it's in frequent contact with moisture, such as urine or perspiration, bacteria and yeast can thrive. Without proper care, this can lead to:
• Diaper rash, also called incontinence-associated dermatitis, or IAD;
• Skin breakdown or sores;
• Urinary tract infections (UTIs);
• Fungal infections.
Good hygiene habits and high-quality incontinence products can significantly reduce these risks.
Start with the right product. Breathable diapers that wick moisture away from the skin help prevent irritation. At TrueHugz, our CoolDiscreet, CoolComfort and CoolGuard adult diapers are designed with feather soft, cotton-like layers and top-quality super absorbent polymer to keep skin dry, even in hot climates like Singapore.
Don’t wait until the diaper is soaked. A good rule of thumb is to check every 3 to 4 hours or more frequently if the person is prone to leaks or skin issues. Overnight diapers like CoolGuard are designed for longer wear, but should still be changed in the morning to keep skin fresh.
Proper perineal hygiene is crucial. Use warm water and a soft cloth, or mild, alcohol-free wipes. Avoid harsh soaps or wipes with fragrance, which can strip away the skin’s natural oils and cause irritation.
For the ladies, always wipe front to back to avoid transferring bacteria from the anus to the urinary tract.
A simple home-made remedy for small pimple or acne at the perineal area due to hot weather, is to wash with a bit of warm water mix with vinegar and salt. It works by helping to reduce inflammation on that area in a natural way.
After cleansing, pat the area dry and allow the skin to air out for a few minutes before putting on a new diaper. If that's not possible, make sure the area is completely dry before re-diapering to prevent trapped moisture.
For individuals who are bedbound, using a fan or a soft, dry towel can help gently dry the skin without causing friction.
If the skin appears red, irritated, or sensitive, applying a thin layer of barrier cream, such as zinc oxide or petroleum jelly, can help protect it from moisture and friction.
Always consult a healthcare professional before using new skincare products, especially for sensitive individuals or those with existing conditions.
Hydration supports skin elasticity and healing. Unless limited by other medical condition, regular water intake, and a diet rich in vitamin C, zinc, and omega-3s, such as in in leafy greens, citrus fruits, and fish should be encouraged.
Good skin health starts from within!
Clothings that are tight and have materials that are not breathable, can also aggravate the heat to that area and may cause even more skin agitation. Wear breathable clothing, choose cotton or materials that breathe to help airflow.
Redness, persistent rash, open sores, or foul-smelling discharge should never be ignored. Quick tip, do a quick check on diapers during change time, to see if there are any spots. These may be signs of a skin infection or UTI and should be checked by a doctor as soon as possible.
Managing incontinence isn't just about leakage control, it’s about maintaining comfort, dignity, and quality of life. By following these hygiene and skincare tips, you can help yourself or your loved one feel confident, clean, and cared for.
At TrueHugz, we’re more than just a diaper brand. We’re a community that understands and supports your journey. From breathable designs to education and encouragement, we’re with you, every hug of the way.
